How to Use This Calculator
Step 1: Measure your room
Use a tape measure to get the length, width, and wall height of the room. For irregular rooms, calculate each section separately and add the totals. Enter values in feet, inches, meters, centimeters, or millimeters using the unit dropdowns.
Step 2: Count doors and windows
Enter the total number of doors and windows in the room. The calculator uses standard sizes by default (36 by 80 inch door, 36 by 48 inch window). If your openings are non-standard, open the advanced section to set custom dimensions.
Step 3: Choose your panel size
Select the drywall panel size from the dropdown. The most common choice is 4 by 8 feet (32 sq ft) for ceilings under 9 feet. Use 4 by 9, 4 by 10, or 4 by 12 panels for taller ceilings or to reduce the number of joints in long walls. Metric 1200 by 2400 mm and 1200 by 3000 mm options are available for international users.
Step 4: Confirm ceiling inclusion
The Include Ceiling checkbox is on by default. Uncheck it if you are only drywalling the walls (for example, a commercial space with a drop ceiling, or a room with existing ceiling material).
Step 5 (optional): Add cost per sheet
Enter your local price per sheet to calculate total estimated material cost. Typical US pricing is $10 to $16 per 4 by 8 panel and $14 to $22 for 4 by 12. Specialty drywall (moisture-resistant, fire-rated, soundproof) costs 30 to 50 percent more.
Step 6 (optional): Adjust waste factor and openings
Click “Show advanced options” to access custom door dimensions, custom window dimensions, and the waste factor slider. The default 10 percent waste is appropriate for typical rectangular rooms. Increase to 15 percent for complex layouts (multiple openings, alcoves, sloped ceilings) or to 20 percent for vaulted ceilings or curved walls.
Reading the results
The Sheets Needed figure is the number to purchase. The Net Drywall Area shows the underlying square footage being covered. The Estimated Cost (if cost per sheet is entered) is the total material cost before tax. Use the copy button to send results to a job estimate or shopping list.
How the Calculation Works
The drywall calculator combines four area calculations into a single panel count. Each component is straightforward, but they must be combined in the correct order.
Step 1: Wall area
Wall area = 2 × (Length + Width) × Height
This is the perimeter of the room multiplied by the wall height, giving the total square footage of all four walls before any subtractions.
Step 2: Ceiling area (if included)
Ceiling area = Length × Width
Set to zero if the Include Ceiling checkbox is unchecked. Most residential drywall jobs include the ceiling, but commercial spaces with drop ceilings or acoustic tile typically do not.
Step 3: Opening deductions
Door area = Door count × (Door width × Door height)
Window area = Window count × (Window width × Window height)
Standard defaults: 36 by 80 inch door (20 sq ft each), 36 by 48 inch window (12 sq ft each). Custom dimensions are available in the advanced section.
Step 4: Net drywall area
Net area = Wall area + Ceiling area - Door area - Window area
Step 5: Apply waste factor
Adjusted area = Net area × (1 + waste decimal)
The default 10 percent waste covers cutting waste, breakage, and offcuts. Increase to 15 to 20 percent for complex layouts with many openings, vaulted ceilings, or curved walls.
Step 6: Convert to sheets
Sheets needed = ceiling(Adjusted area / Sheet area)
Always rounded up to the nearest whole sheet because partial sheets cannot be purchased. Standard sheet areas:
- 4 by 8 panel: 32 sq ft
- 4 by 9 panel: 36 sq ft
- 4 by 10 panel: 40 sq ft
- 4 by 12 panel: 48 sq ft
Cost calculation (optional):
Total cost = Sheets needed × Cost per sheet
Note on stud and joist spacing: Standard framing spacing is 16 inches on center for studs and 24 inches on center for joists, both of which divide evenly into 48 inches. This ensures panel edges land on framing members without cutting waste from the panel width itself, which is why 4-foot wide drywall is universal in North American construction.
Worked Example
Scenario: Finishing a 16 by 24 foot basement with 8 foot ceilings
You are drywalling a finished basement. The room measures 16 feet wide by 24 feet long with 8 foot ceilings. There is one standard entry door and two standard windows. You plan to use 4 by 8 panels at $12 per sheet, and will install drywall on both the walls and ceiling.
Step 1: Wall area
Wall area = 2 × (16 + 24) × 8 = 2 × 40 × 8 = 640 sq ft
Step 2: Ceiling area
Ceiling area = 16 × 24 = 384 sq ft
Step 3: Door area
Standard door = 36 inches × 80 inches = 3 ft × 6.67 ft = 20 sq ft
Total door area = 1 × 20 = 20 sq ft
Step 4: Window area
Standard window = 36 inches × 48 inches = 3 ft × 4 ft = 12 sq ft
Total window area = 2 × 12 = 24 sq ft
Step 5: Net drywall area
Net area = 640 + 384 – 20 – 24 = 980 sq ft
Step 6: Apply 10% waste factor
Adjusted area = 980 × 1.10 = 1,078 sq ft
Step 7: Convert to sheets
4 by 8 panel area = 32 sq ft
Sheets = ceiling(1,078 / 32) = ceiling(33.7) = 34 sheets
Step 8: Calculate cost
Total cost = 34 × $12 = $408
Final estimate: Order 34 sheets of 4 by 8 drywall (plus one extra for breakage = 35 sheets), budget approximately $420 for drywall sheets alone. Add separate budget for joint compound, tape, screws, and corner bead (typically 15 to 25 percent of the drywall cost).
Comparison with 4 by 12 panels: If you switch to 4 by 12 panels at $18 per sheet, sheets needed = ceiling(1,078 / 48) = 23 sheets, total cost = 23 × $18 = $414. Similar material cost, but with significantly fewer joints to tape and finish. The trade-off is heavier panels that require two installers and possibly a drywall hoist.
Understanding the Variables
Length and Width
The floor dimensions of the room being drywalled, measured along the inside faces of the walls (or where the walls will be once framed). For rooms with bump-outs or irregular shapes, treat each rectangular section separately and add the resulting sheet counts.
Wall Height
The vertical distance from finished floor to ceiling (or to the bottom of the joists if drywalling before ceiling install). Standard residential ceilings are 8 feet. Modern construction often uses 9 or 10 foot ceilings, requiring 4 by 9 or 4 by 10 panels to span without horizontal joints. For vaulted or cathedral ceilings, measure the average height and increase the waste factor in advanced to 15 to 20 percent.
Doors
The number of door openings in the room. Each door reduces the wall area by the default 20 sq ft (36 by 80 inches), the US standard interior door. Custom door dimensions are available in the advanced section for exterior doors (typically 36 by 84 inches), French doors, sliding doors, or pocket doors.
Windows
The number of window openings in the room. Each window reduces the wall area by the default 12 sq ft (36 by 48 inches), a common single-hung window size. Custom window dimensions are available in the advanced section for picture windows, sliders, or non-standard sizes. Bay windows should be measured as their projection plus the surrounding wall area.
Sheet Size
The drywall panel dimensions you plan to purchase. Sheets are 4 feet wide universally in North America to match standard 16-inch on center stud spacing (4 feet equals 48 inches, divides into three 16-inch sections). Length options:
- 4 by 8 (32 sq ft): standard residential, easy to handle solo
- 4 by 9 (36 sq ft): for 9-foot ceilings, hung horizontally
- 4 by 10 (40 sq ft): for 10-foot ceilings or long walls
- 4 by 12 (48 sq ft): commercial and high-end residential, requires two installers
Metric options (1200 by 2400 mm and 1200 by 3000 mm) are standard in Europe, Australia, and many international markets.
Include Ceiling
Toggles whether the ceiling area (Length times Width) is added to the total drywall calculation. Default is on, since most residential drywall jobs include the ceiling. Uncheck for walls-only scenarios such as basement finishing under joists left exposed, commercial spaces with drop ceilings, or rooms where the ceiling already has finished material.
Cost per Sheet
The price you expect to pay per drywall panel at your local supplier. Typical US pricing:
- Standard 1/2 inch 4 by 8: $10 to $14
- Standard 1/2 inch 4 by 12: $14 to $20
- 5/8 inch fire-rated (Type X): add 20 to 30 percent
- Moisture-resistant (green board): add 25 to 40 percent
- Soundproof (QuietRock and similar): 3 to 4 times standard pricing

Waste Factor (advanced)
The percentage added to the net area to account for cutting waste, breakage, and offcuts that cannot be reused. Defaults to 10 percent. Recommended ranges:

- 15 percent: complex layouts, multiple openings, alcoves, niches
