The calculator works in two modes: a simple default mode for quick volume and tonnage estimates, and an advanced mode for mix selection, waste factor, and cost. Here’s how to use both.

Step 1. Enter your area dimensions

Type the length and width of the area being paved. You can use any unit (feet, meters, inches, centimeters, or yards) from the dropdown next to each input. For thickness, the default is inches, which is how asphalt depth is universally specified. Typical compacted thicknesses: 2 inches for light residential overlays, 3 inches for standard residential driveways, 4 inches and above for heavy vehicle or commercial use.

Step 2. Select your asphalt mix

Pick your mix type from the dropdown in the advanced options. The calculator automatically applies the correct density to convert volume to tons. Standard hot mix asphalt is the default and covers most residential driveway work. If your supplier gives you a specific density, choose “Custom” and enter it.

Step 3. Open advanced options for tonnage and cost

Step 4. Adjust the waste factor

Calculating asphalt requires two steps. First, the volume:

Volume = Length × Width × Thickness

Then, the weight based on the asphalt mix density:

Tons = (Volume in cubic feet × Density in lb/ft³) ÷ 2,000

All three measurements need to be in the same unit before you multiply. Asphalt thickness is almost always specified in inches, while length and width are in feet, so you convert thickness to feet by dividing by 12.

Asphalt density reference

Different asphalt mixes compact to different densities. The calculator uses these industry-standard values:

  • Hot mix asphalt, standard: 145 lb/ft³ (about 1.96 tons per cubic yard)
  • Dense-graded HMA: 148 lb/ft³ (about 2.00 tons per cubic yard)

A common field rule of thumb is that one cubic yard of compacted hot mix asphalt weighs roughly 2 tons. If your supplier provides an exact mix density, enter it as a custom value in the advanced options.

50 ft × 12 ft × 0.25 ft = 150 cubic feet

Length and Width

The two horizontal dimensions of the area being paved. The calculator accepts feet, meters, inches, centimeters, and yards. For irregular driveways, break the area into rectangles, calculate each separately, and add the results. Measure the actual paved surface, not the excavated area, which is usually slightly wider.

Thickness

The compacted depth of the asphalt layer. Default is inches. This is the most important variable for cost because asphalt is heavy and small thickness changes move the tonnage significantly. Typical compacted thicknesses:

  • 1.5 to 2 inches for thin overlays on sound existing pavement
  • 3 inches for standard residential driveways over a prepared base

Industry standard for asphalt is 5 to 8%, lower than concrete or gravel because machine placement is efficient. Use 10 to 12% for small or irregular jobs done by hand.

Cost per Ton (advanced)

The price your asphalt plant or paving contractor quotes per ton. Asphalt pricing tracks crude oil prices and varies by region and season.
