How to Use This Calculator

Step 1: Pick your input method

Choose Footprint + Pitch if you are starting from the house dimensions, or Roof Area if you already have the roof surface area from plans, a satellite measurement, or a contractor’s report.

Step 2 (Footprint + Pitch): Measure the footprint and set the pitch

Enter the length and width of the rectangle the roof covers, measured to the edges of the eaves, not the walls, since overhangs are roof too. Then select your pitch from the dropdown; each option shows its multiplier. If you do not know the pitch, our roof pitch calculator finds it from a quick level-and-tape measurement.

Step 2 (Roof Area): Enter the surface area

Type the total roof surface area in square feet or square meters. Use this mode for complex roofs where you have measured each plane separately and added them.

Step 3: Set the waste factor

The default 10 percent suits a simple gable roof. Open the advanced section and raise it to 15 percent for hips, valleys, or dormers, and toward 20 percent for cut-up, complex roofs. Small roofs also waste proportionally more than large ones.

Step 4: Check the bundle packing

Leave bundles per square at 3 for standard three-tab and architectural shingles. Switch to 4 in the advanced section if your product is a heavyweight or luxury shingle; the wrapper or spec sheet states the coverage.

Step 5 (optional): Add cost

Enter your shingle price per square or per bundle, matching the supplier’s quote, to get a material cost.

Reading the results

Roof Area is the surface you own; Shingles to Order is what to buy. Take the bundle count to the supplier, then add starter strips, ridge caps, underlayment, drip edge, and nails as separate line items. The copy button captures the figures for your order.

The Formula

How the Calculation Works

The shingle estimate runs in four steps: footprint to roof area, roof area to squares, waste, and squares to bundles.

Step 1: Footprint to roof area

Roof area = Length × Width × Pitch multiplier

The footprint (the flat rectangle the roof covers, including overhangs) understates the true surface because the roof is sloped. The pitch multiplier corrects for that: it is √(rise² + run²) / run for your pitch. A 6:12 roof has a multiplier of 1.118, so a 1,200 square foot footprint carries 1,342 square feet of roofing. If you already know the roof surface area (from plans or a measuring app), the Roof Area mode skips this step.

Step 2: Convert to squares

Squares = Roof area / 100

The square (100 square feet of roof) is the unit the entire roofing trade estimates and prices in.

Step 3: Apply waste

Order area = Roof area × (1 + waste)

Cut shingles at rakes, valleys, hips, and penetrations cannot all be reused, so an allowance is standard: about 10 percent for a simple gable roof, 15 percent for roofs with hips, valleys, or dormers, and up to 20 percent for very complex layouts.

Step 4: Convert to bundles

Bundles = ceiling(Order squares × Bundles per square)

Standard shingles are packed 3 bundles per square; heavyweight architectural and luxury shingles can be 4. The result always rounds up to whole bundles, because that is how the store sells them.

Cost (optional):

Cost = Order squares × price per square, or Bundles × price per bundle

The calculator switches the math to match how your supplier quotes.

Worked check: 1,200 sq ft footprint at 6:12 = 1,342 sq ft of roof = 13.4 squares. With 10 percent waste, order 14.8 squares, which is 45 bundles at 3 per square.

Real Example

Worked Example

Scenario: Reshingling a 40 by 30 foot hip-roofed house at 8:12

The house footprint, measured eave to eave, is 40 by 30 feet. The roof is a hip design at an 8:12 pitch, so you use a 15 percent waste factor. Architectural shingles are quoted at $110 per square.

Step 1: Roof area

Footprint = 40 × 30 = 1,200 sq ft

8:12 multiplier = 1.202

Roof area = 1,200 × 1.202 = 1,442 sq ft (14.4 squares)

Step 2: Apply 15% waste

1,442 × 1.15 = 1,659 sq ft, which is 16.6 squares to order

Step 3: Bundles

16.6 × 3 = 49.8, rounded up to 50 bundles

Step 4: Cost

16.6 squares × $110 = about $1,825 in field shingles

Final estimate: Order 50 bundles of field shingles, about $1,825, then add the extras: hip and ridge cap bundles for the four hips and the ridge (sold by linear foot), starter strip for the eaves, underlayment, drip edge, and roofing nails. The hip design is exactly why the waste factor sat at 15 percent rather than 10: every hip line generates angled cuts on both sides.

Understanding the Variables

House Length and Width

The footprint of the rectangle your roof covers, measured to the eave edges so overhangs are included. A 12 inch overhang on each side adds 2 feet to each dimension, which is real roof you must shingle. For L-shaped or complex homes, break the footprint into rectangles, run each through the calculator, and add the bundle counts.

Roof Pitch

The steepness of the roof, which sets the pitch multiplier converting flat footprint into sloped surface. The dropdown covers flat through 12:12, each labeled with its multiplier. The effect is large: the same footprint needs about 5 percent more shingles at 4:12 but 41 percent more at 12:12. If you are unsure of your pitch, measure it first with the roof pitch calculator.

Roof Surface Area (Roof Area mode)

The total sloped area of all roof planes, in square feet or square meters. Use this mode when you have measured the actual roof, plane by plane, or have a figure from plans or a roof report. The pitch is already baked into a measured surface area, so no multiplier is applied.

Shingle Cost

Your price, per square or per bundle to match the quote. Architectural asphalt shingles commonly run about $30 to $50 per bundle, roughly $90 to $150 per square for material, varying by brand, line, and region. Three-tab runs cheaper, luxury shingles considerably more. This input is optional and only affects the cost output.

Bundles per Square (advanced)

How the manufacturer packs the product. Standard three-tab and most architectural shingles are 3 bundles per square, each bundle covering about 33 square feet. Heavyweight architectural and luxury shingles are often 4 bundles per square because each shingle is thicker and heavier. The bundle wrapper states the coverage; when in doubt, check it rather than assuming.

Waste Factor (advanced)

The allowance for cut shingles at rakes, hips, valleys, and penetrations, plus breakage. Use about 10 percent for a simple gable, 15 percent where the roof has hips, valleys, or dormers, and up to 20 percent for complex, cut-up roofs. Waste shingle halves from one rake can often start the next course on the other side of a gable, which is why simple roofs sit at the low end.

The roofing square

The square, 100 square feet of roof surface, is the standard estimating and pricing unit across the US roofing industry. Contractors quote per square, manufacturers state coverage per square, and bundle packing is defined against it, which is why this calculator reports squares alongside square feet.

ASTM D3462 (Asphalt Shingles, Glass Felt)

The standard specification for fiberglass-based asphalt shingles, covering tear strength and fastener pull-through resistance. Virtually all modern asphalt shingles are fiberglass mat products manufactured to D3462, and quality programs reference it as the baseline.

ASTM D7158 (Wind Resistance)

Classifies sealed asphalt shingles by wind resistance: Class D (115 mph), Class G (120 mph), and Class H (150 mph). Local codes in wind-prone regions specify the minimum class, so check the rating before ordering, not after.

ASTM E108 / UL 790 (Fire Classification)

The fire test standards behind shingle ratings, with Class A the highest. Most fiberglass asphalt shingles carry a Class A rating as part of a listed roof assembly.

IRC R905.2 (Installation Requirements)

The International Residential Code governs asphalt shingle installation: minimum slope of 2:12 (with doubled underlayment between 2:12 and 4:12), underlayment requirements, and fastening. Slope is the gate: below 2:12, shingles are not a permitted covering at all.

IRC R908.3 (Reroofing)

Code permits at most two layers of asphalt shingles on a roof. A recover (new shingles over old) is only allowed over a single existing layer in serviceable condition; two or more existing layers must be torn off first. This changes a reroof estimate substantially, so confirm the layer count before ordering.
