About Building Calculator

Construction calculators that just work

Free construction calculators built on published industry standards. Designed for fast answers, with the formulas and references shown openly so you can verify the math yourself.

Our Story

A focused project, built by a developer.

Building Calculator is a small project built by a developer with a technical background. The goal is simple: free construction calculators that give you the right answer based on the same standards professional estimators use — without sign-ups, paywalls, or noise.

Most online construction calculators have one or more problems. Some are missing the units you need. Some skip the waste factor. Some give you a result without showing the formula behind it. A few are flat-out wrong. The ones that are good often hide the useful features behind a subscription.

“Show your work. Cite your sources. Make it free. That’s the whole philosophy.”

Every calculator on this site is built around three commitments: verifiable formulas (cited to published standards like ACI, ASTM, and IRC), real manufacturer specifications for things like bag yields and material weights, and complete transparency — every page shows the formula, walks through a worked example, and lists the references behind it.

If you want to verify our math, you should be able to. If you spot something wrong, please tell us and we’ll fix it.

What We Stand For

Three principles, no exceptions.

Every calculator we publish has to pass these tests. If it can’t, we don’t ship it.

Built on published standards

Every formula references published industry standards (ACI, ASTM, IRC) and manufacturer specifications. Sources are cited so you can verify the math yourself.

Fast and focused

Most projects need a quick answer. Calculators load fast, ask only for what’s necessary, and give you the result without forcing you through optional fields you don’t care about.

Free, no sign-up

No paywalls, no premium tier, no email gates. Just free calculators that work. The site may include occasional ads or affiliate links to materials, but the calculators themselves stay free.

Our Process

How every calculator gets built.

No shortcuts, no rushed math. Every calculator goes through the same process before it goes live.

1

Start with the published standards

Every calculator begins by reading the actual reference documents — ACI specifications, ASTM standards, IRC code, and manufacturer technical data sheets. The formulas come from these sources, not from rough approximations.

2

Verify against established calculators

Once a formula is implemented, it’s cross-checked against trusted reference calculators (such as those from concrete and material manufacturers) to confirm the math produces consistent results.

3

Build for both quick estimates and detailed planning

Simple inputs by default. Advanced options — waste factors, multiple bag sizes, cost estimation, unit conversion — available one click away when you need them.

4

Show the formula and a worked example

Every calculator page includes the formula, a step-by-step worked example with real numbers, an explanation of each variable, and the standards behind the math. Nothing is hidden.

5

Update when standards or specs change

Building codes evolve. Manufacturer specifications change. The site tracks these updates and revises calculators when needed. Every page shows when it was last reviewed.
